Dayton-Area Students Receive JJR Solutions Starfish Scholarships

Congrats to our Starfish Scholarship Recipients: Savannah Couch, Joel Martin, and Roxy Rhynard!

Dayton, Ohio – Three Dayton-area high school graduates have been selected as recipients of the JJR Solutions Starfish Scholarship.

Savannah Couch, Joel Martin, and Roxy Rhynard will each receive a renewable-per-year scholarship over a four-year period to pursue their college degrees.

Couch, a 2022 graduate of Northridge High School, will attend Sinclair Community College and major in occupational therapy. She hopes to use her passion for biology and medicine to help transform the lives of those with physical limitations. A member of the National Honor Society, Couch is active in her community as a volunteer with Northridge Community Clean-Up and a member of her church youth group.

Martin, a 2022 graduate of Trotwood-Madison High School and Miami Valley Career Technology Center, will attend Wittenberg University to major in exercise science. As a first-generation college student, he aims to help his family gain generational wealth. A member of the National Honor Society, he has been active in a variety of community service opportunities and excelled on his school’s track and field and cross-country teams, twice winning the RAM of the Year Award for Cross Country.

Rhynard, a 2022 Stivers School for the Arts graduate, will attend Otterbein University and major in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. Their goal is to further their activism efforts and make the world better for others like themselves. Rhynard has been heavily involved in the performing arts as a theatre production assistant, musician, and backstage crew member. They were also active as president of the Stivers Gay-Straight Alliance and a member of Mu Alpha Theta (math club). The owner of their own neighborhood pet-sitting business, Rhynard has been a volunteer for the Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals (SICSA).

“We are excited to honor and assist these amazing young people as they step out into the next chapter of their lives,” said JJR Solutions Chief Executive Officer Dave Judson. “I am inspired by their stories and can only imagine the difference they are going to make in our world.”

Established in 2019 through The Dayton Foundation, the JJR Solutions Starfish Scholarship fund rewards students who exhibit courage, resolve, character, and positive influence in their communities.

Applicants must:

  • Be a graduating senior from a select group of Dayton-area school districts

  • Be accepted to a two-year or four-year accredited college or university in Ohio

  • Demonstrate financial need

  • Demonstrate an active role in community involvement and/or extracurricular activities

  • Write an essay telling how they made a positive difference or inspired others

“Our goal is to award at least 10 of these scholarships by 2025, and we are well on our way to exceeding that goal given these three students make six total recipients with three years to go toward our goal,” shared Judson. “Being able to contribute to the education of young people in our community is completely in line with our purpose at JJR, and we’re grateful and humbled to have this opportunity to support the well-being of our community in this way.”
