Grow Far at JJR! Joe Skinner, VP of Capture, says, "I never expected to get involved with contracts, security, or quality management, but the need was there for JJR, and it ultimately helped me end up where I am today."

One example of an employee who has “grown far at JJR” is Joe Skinner. Learn more about his career path and the advice he has for anyone looking to develop their career without leaving their company.


JJR: What roles have you had at JJR?

Joe: I originally started at JJR as the part-time office manager before taking over the contracts manager role in 2012 as a full-time employee. During that time, security and quality management were added to the role, which included managing our facility and staff clearances and leading our ISO audits. In 2018, I moved over to the Market Development & Growth (MDG) Team and have been leading the capture process ever since while also overseeing the customer journey.


JJR: How did JJR make it possible for you to grow?

J: One of the great things about working for a small business is the constantly changing environment and flexibility of the team. There are always opportunities as new needs pop up. When I took over contract management, there was no full-time contracts manager on staff; it was a vice president’s additional role. The more JJR grows, the more opportunities for our team.

 

JJR: What is your advice for those who are looking to grow their careers in their current company?

J: Be vocal about what you want to do. I have seen so many people at JJR move from one position to another, but that would not have happened unless those people were transparent to their supervisors and leadership about what they want to do. Also, be open to opportunities. I never expected to get involved with contracts, security, or quality management, but the need was there for JJR, and it ultimately helped me end up where I am today, giving me a broader background to serve clients and partners.

 

JJR: What do you enjoy most about working at JJR?

J: I feel like this gets said a lot, but ultimately it comes down to the people. I could find a job in capture at a number of Government contractors, but there’s no guarantee that I would find as great of a team to work with. I have incredible support from the whole MDG Team, and cross-collaboration with the Operations and Customer Mission Success Teams allows me to interact with some of my favorite people. And that includes all the four-legged friends that come to work!
